Primary Icon (the block "A")

Orginially designed as an athletics identifier, the icon has developed significant recognition value, and may be used to identify the university in less formal media, when placed in close proximity to the words "Appalachian State University," "Appalachian State" or "Appalachian."

Usage guidelines

  • The icon should be used when a bolder, more informal look is desired, particularly by student groups and alumni organizations.
  • The icon is a registered trademark. The ® symbol must be applied when printed on merchandise.
  • The icon must be reproduced from official artwork.
  • The letterforms for the icon have been drawn specifically for the university; therefore you cannot substitute a typeface for them.
  • The icon can be produced in variation of  three spot colors (Black, Pantone 116C, Pantone 429C),  two spot colors (Black and Pantone 116C),  and as black and white.
  • Area of protection: The protected area around the icon is roughly equal to the triangle height of the inside of the "A". Other typographical or design elements must not encroach on this space.

Incorrect usage of the icon

    • separation of elements,
